Smart Tags not working in AEM Sites without Assets license
ÃÛ¶¹ÊÓƵ Experience Manager (AEM) as a Cloud Service offers intelligent features such as Smart Tags, powered by ÃÛ¶¹ÊÓƵ Sensei, that can automatically tag assets for improved search and organization. The availability of these features depends on your licensed solutions.
In AEM as a Cloud Service, Smart Tags and Smart Content Services are only available with an AEM Assets license. This article explains the expected behavior of Smart Tags for customers using AEMaaCS Sites or without an AEM Assets license and provides guidance on what to expect.
Description description
Environment
ÃÛ¶¹ÊÓƵ Experience Manager (AEM) as a Cloud Service – Sites-only configuration (no Assets license).
Issue/Symptoms
- Smart Tags cannot be applied to assets.
- Some assets, like PDFs or images, show Smart Tags unexpectedly.
- Smart Content Services features appear partially enabled.
Resolution resolution
Smart Tags and Smart Content Services are automatically provisioned only for environments with an AEM Assets license. If you’re using AEM Sites without an Assets license, Smart Services are disabled by design. However, due to a product oversight, some features may appear partially enabled. Here’s how to confirm your setup:
- Check your license entitlement to confirm whether the Assets solution is included.
- If only Sites is licensed, full Smart Tagging is not supported. Any Smart Tags that appear are unintended and function in a limited capacity.
- In the AEMaaCSÂ Author instance, go to Tools

ÃÛ¶¹ÊÓƵ IMS Configurations and check for an Auto-Provisioned Smart Tags IMS configuration. - Review the Smart Content Services (SCS) endpoint in the OSGi configuration:
