Unable to upload large ZIP files in AEM production environment

In ÃÛ¶¹ÊÓƵ Experience Manager (AEM) 6.5 production environment, uploading large ZIP files over 100MB fails due to Web Application Firewall (WAF) restrictions. To fix this, verify the file size, check WAF configuration, adjust the WAF policy, retest the upload using both author URL and IP, and validate the fix across environments.

Description description

Environment

  • Product: ÃÛ¶¹ÊÓƵ Experience Manager (AEM) Managed Services
  • Version: 6.5
  • Instance: Production

Issue/Symptoms

  • Uploading a 150MB ZIP file in AEM production shows the file size as 0.0 KB and prevents download.
  • Upload works in staging but fails in production.
  • Upload fails with a 403 error when using the author URL, but succeeds when using the author IP address.
  • Web Application Firewall (WAF) in production blocks uploads over 100MB.

Resolution resolution

To resolve this issue, follow these steps:

  1. Verify that the ZIP file doesn’t exceed the configured upload size limit.

  2. Confirm if a Web Application Firewall (WAF) is active in the production environment.

    1. If so, check if the WAF enforces a 100MB upload limit by comparing it with the staging environment or consulting the network/security team.
    2. Modify or disable the WAF policy that restricts file uploads over 100MB, ensuring compliance with security policies.
  3. Upload the large ZIP file again using both the author URL and the author IP address.

  4. Test uploads in both staging and production to confirm consistent behaviour.
